Following on from the success of our previous dinners, for 2014, the Brothers invited ex Wallabies star and media personality Rod Kafer this year, sponsored by Bankwest. The organisers also went for a change of venue and moved the event to the Joondalup Reception Centre and also a change of date, moving to the end of season as opposed to the previous ones we have held in the mid-season. The dinner was well attended with a great mix of people. We had good numbers from the club but also had all our sponsors in attendance and a large number of our key supporters including local politicians Jan Nordberger, Albert Jacob and Ian Goodenough, our local councillors and from our RugbyWA, CEO Mark Sinderberry, and Chairman David Redpath. Rod, who is the only player on the planet to have won Rugby World Cup, Super Rugby, Tri-Nations and Heineken Cup titles, entertained the crowd with anecdotes from his career here in Australia and also in the UK including his sacking from the Saracens club in London where his boss was none other than Mark Sinderberry! He finished his spot with a very interactive and lively question and answer session where he took a series of questions from the floor about all manner of things, most of them rugby related. The night was finished by the presentation by Rob to our outgoing Director of Rugby, Brett Gallagher of the club’s prestigious award, the Patron’s Cup. Brett for once was totally speechless but accepted his award and left the stage to a standing ovation from the crowd. There was also a large raffle and auction where a host of top items were won, bid on and sold and the feedback from the audience has been very positive. The change of venue didn’t cause any problems and thanks to John Allen’s ingenuity, we arranged a bus service from the clubrooms to the venue so that everyone could have pre drinks there and put some funds into the ACSRA coffers. A massive thank you to the sponsor for the event, Bankwest and also to Stuart McIsaac, from our Under 12s side who very generously donated a signed rugby jumper for the auction. A big thanks also to the organisers, Rob Green and Liam Smyth and a number of others who helped on the night including our great MC Brett Allen who stepped in for our usual MC, Shane Kempton. The organiser’s area always looking for ways to improve this great annual event which showcases our club brilliantly with the wider community including our members but also sponsors and other vital supporters. If anyone out there has any ideas on how the night can be improved or wishes to be involved in the organisation of the event, just contact Liam Smyth or Rob Green, they would welcome your input.
