Massive Year for our Juniors
GRAND final fever hit our Junior teams on the weekend, contesting seven out of a possible eight junior age groups. With teams from under-10s to under-16s in the RugbyWA Juniors league, the HBF Arena-based club brought home four premierships from the grand final series held at Southern Lions RUFC on Saturday. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, junior president Masie Masterton said this was its most successful year to date. “This year we had nine teams in our under-6 to under-9 leagues and contested in 14 junior leagues from under-10s to under-18s,” he said. “At the end of the season, our junior section qualified for nine finals series out of the 14 leagues with three minor premierships. “Out of these nine, seven made grand finals and out of those seven, we celebrated four grand final winners.”
These winners were the under-10s Gold, who were also minor premiers, under-11s Gold, under-14s as minor premiers for the second year running and under-15s who won their fourth consecutive flag and were minor premiers for the second year in a row. Runners-up were the under-12s Gold, under-13s Gold and under-16s.
The club also saw three of its five senior teams qualifying for finals. Masterton said since establishing in 1998, the club had grown to be one of the biggest in WA. “With almost 400 junior members and five senior teams, the club is going from strength to strength,” he said. “We have a high focus on our long-term plan and place a lot of our time on our grass roots rugby and our juniors.” He said the “community club” was always looking for more volunteers or players. “We welcome all players of all abilities; we never turn anyone away,” he said. “We believe rugby is a game that is available to everyone and teaches great life lessons such as respect, team work, mateship, honesty and dedication.”
