U18s Champions for 2021

An amazing game of rugby, the final play secured the win for our U18's with a try at the death to take the lead & ultimately the championship defeating Nedlands 20 to 17. A fantastic achievement not lost on the Brothers coaches Denis Skillen & Chris Fox who were very proud of their boys.

First Half

Joondalup U18 was scheduled to take on Nedlands U18, with the two top sides in WA being positioned 2 and 1 on the ladder it was sure to be a cracker!

Straight from the kick-off, it was evident that this was going to be a very physical game with both sets of forwards putting in the big hits and having to work hard to contain the game.

Nedlands started the scoring with a try and conversion to take the lead 7- 0, Joondalup responded quickly with a well-worked forwards try from the big lock Josiah to take the score to 7 – 7. As the game continued as was a nail-biting experience with such a close scoring game.

Another great try from Nedlands and with a conversion to take the lead to 14-7 but our Brothers quickly responded with a penalty kick adding three much-needed points followed by a stroke of brilliance from the Joondalup flying winger Preston who managed to step the Nedlands 10 and run uncontested 60m to score in the corner closing the gap at half-time and putting us ahead 14 – 15.

Second Half

Some quality rugby and intense back and forth attack and defensive play ensued for the 2nd half with both teams rallying and parents and spectators on edge for near on 28minutes. Some ill-discipline now from Joondalup gave Nedlands the opportunity for a difficult penalty and slotted it over to take the lead to 17 -15 with only moments to spare.

In the heart-stopping final minute, our Brothers, digging in hard and catching the celebrating opposition off-guard with a quick tap to restart before the final whistle pulled together in an epic show of teamwork to enable Henry Miller to go over in the corner to take the lead in the dying seconds finishing the game 17 – 20 Joondalup crowned champions for 2021!

Nathan Charles RugbyWA CEO and Jason Bell commented that this was probably the most exciting game they had watched during the 2021 season.

The Man of the Match, selected by the officials, was assigned to Josiah Marks the Joondalup young lock who was a great leader today and led by example.
